NUPS-G for Christ is a ......................

THE NATIONAL UNION OF PRESBYTERIAN STUDENTS(NUPS-G)

1. Name
The Union shall be known and referred to as the National Union of Presbyterian Students – Ghana [NUPS-G] hereinafter referred to as the Union.

2. Objectives:
The objectives of the Union shall be:
1. To bring all Presbyterian Students in all Post-Basic Educational Institutions in the country under one umbrella-NUPS-G.
2. To inculcate in members, the fear of God by means of effective Bible study and prayer and to encourage effective witnessing for the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. To foster co-operation with other Christian Movements in Ghana and elsewhere.
4. To establish branches of the Union in all Post-Basic Educational Institutions in Ghana.
3. Membership:
1. Membership shall be open to all Presbyterians in all Educational Institution above Basic level.
2. Every member shall be required to possess a NUPS-G membership card,
3. Associate membership shall be open to:
i. All members of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana other than members of the NUPS-G.
ii. Students who are non-members of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana but express
interest in the Union’s activities and identify with the aims/objectives and
beliefs of NUPS-G.
Every member shall belong to a branch unless he/she is an Alumnus.

4. Motto/Slogan:
The motto and slogan of the union shall be:
1. Motto: For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain [Phil. 1:21]
2. NUPS-G For Christ

5. Structure:
1. The Union shall have the hierarchical structure hereinafter listed:
a. National Congress
b. National Council
c. National Executive Committee
d. Co-ordinating Branch conference
e. Co-ordinating Branches
f. Local Executive Committee
g. Sub-Co-ordinating Branches
h. Co-ordinated Branches
2. For the avoidance of doubt the National Congress shall be the highest decision making body
of the Union and its decision shall be final unless otherwise amended or changed by it.
6. National Council:
1. There shall be National Council, which shall comprise:
a. The National Executive Committee(NEC)
b. Representatives from each of the Co-ordinating Branches. The representatives shall comprise:
the president, the secretary and schools co-ordinator or in their absence, any other executive
member as the executive may determine.
c. The immediate past president of NEC.
2. The National Council may co-opt any other person to serve on the council for such purposes and
such time as it may deem fit.
3. i. The National Council shall meet at least twice a year.
ii. An extraordinary council meeting may be summoned by the president in consultation with
the secretary when it is deemed necessary.
iii. Where the President exercises its powers under the immediate proceeding sub-clause, he
shall give at least 14days notice to the other members of the council unless otherwise
waived in writing by at least 2/3 majority of the council members.
iv. A Co-ordinating Branch may requisition extra-ordinary council meeting.
a. Such a requisition shall be sent to the National Executive Committee at least 3 weeks
before the intended date for the meeting.
b. Where such a meeting is requisitioned, the National Executive Committee may refuse
to call a council meeting by providing written reasons for the refusal.
Provided however that where the requisition by a Co-ordinating branch is supported
by two other Co-ordinating branches, the National Executive Committee shall call an
emergency council meeting.
v. President shall be the Chairman of the National Council and shall accordingly chair all
Council Meetings:
a. In the absence of the President, the Vice-President shall act and;
b. In the absence of the President and Vice-President, any National Executive
Committee member may act.

7. Executive committee:
1. There shall be an Executive Committee comprising:
a. The President
b. Vice President
c. General Secretary
d. Treasurer
e. Financial Secretary
f. Organizing Secretary
g. Prayer Secretary
2. a. The Executive Committee shall set up and maintain the National Secretariat of the
Union.
b. The Executive Committee and accordingly the National Secretariat shall rotate among
such co-ordinating branches as may be determined from time by the Council with the
approval of congress.
3. Each Co-ordinating Branch shall host the Secretariat for a period of two years. Accordingly,
each Executive Member shall hold the position for a period of two years.
8. Function of executive committee members:
1. PRESIDENT
i. Shall see to the spiritual growth of the Union and ensure that the aims and policies of the
Union are strictly adhered to.
ii. Shall be responsible for the general running of the Union.
iii. Shall preside over all meetings, both executive and general.
iv. Shall have the power to exercise a casting vote in those meeting.
v. Shall represent the Union at General Assembly.
vi. The President shall, together with the Secretary, represent the Union at Y.P.G National
Conferences.
vii. Shall have the power to establish such relevant sub-committees which shall help the
smooth running of the Union.
viii. He shall be the representative and spokesman of NUPS-G in relation to the church and
when necessary.

2. VICE PRESIDENT
i. Shall assist the President and be responsible for the running of the Union in the absence
of the President.
ii. Shall oversee the organization of the Students-In-Evangelism [SICE] programme.
iii. Shall co-ordinate/oversee the activities of the sub-committees of the Union.
iv. Shall be in charge of the Honoraria.
v. Shall be responsible to the President.
3. GENERAL SECRETARY
i. Shall summon all meetings in consultation with the National President.
ii. Shall keep records of all proceedings and resolutions at all meetings at the Council.
iii. Shall be responsible for all correspondence of the NUPS-G Council.
iv. Shall report annually to the NUPS-G Council, the National Congress, and the General
Assembly through the chairperson, committee on youth ministry to the director Church
Life and Nurture Department.
v. Shall see to the implementation of decisions taken by the Council and the National
Biennial Congress.
vi. Shall have power to act in consultation with the NEC, in situations that need immediate
action. Such action shall however be reported at the appropriate time to the National
Council for ratification.
vii. Shall promote and further the relationship between the Union and the Youth in the
Church as shall be directed by the Council and approved by General Assembly.

4. TREASURER
i. Shall be responsible for keeping the money.
ii. Shall be a signatory to the accounts.

5. FINANCIAL SECRETARY
i. Shall keep the fiscal records of the Union.
ii. Shall give statement of accounts at NEC meeting and also any time upon request by
the council members.
iii. Shall be the chairperson of any National Financial sub-committee if constituted.
iv. Shall in conjunction with the fund raising committee suggest ways of raising funds
and inform Council accordingly for implementation.
v. Shall present financial records for auditing at least four [4] weeks before congress.
vi. Shall present financial report at congress.
6. ORGANIZING SECRETARY
i. Shall be responsible for the arrangements for the Union’s work campus.
ii. Shall be responsible for the safekeeping of the Union’s properties.
iii. Shall be responsible for any other duties as the National Secretariat may from time
to time direct.
7. PRAYER SECRETARY
i. Shall direct and co-ordinate the prayer affairs of the Union.
ii. Shall assist the Organizing Secretary in the dispensation of his duties.
iii. Shall strictly concern himself /herself with the spiritual growth of the Union and the
prayer life of the Group and individual members.
iv. Shall send Prayer bulletins to the various co-ordinating. branches.
v. Shall see to the organization of all national retreats and prayer programme's.
vi. Shall ensure that all co-ordinating branches celebrate youth and students week and
all other prayer and fasting and other common programmes with the youth declared
by the Union.

9. Appointment of Executive Committee Members
i. Members of NEC shall be appointed by the Co-ordinating Branch whose turn it is to host the
National Secretariat in consultation with NEC. These officers shall be presented to council for
approval. A person shall not qualify for appointment to the NEC unless:
a. He/She is a member of at least one departmental group in his local congregation, unless
otherwise directed by Council.
b. He/She is a good standing member of the Union with demonstrable Christian maturity
and understanding of the Presbyterian Faith, doctrines and Systems.
c. He/She is prepared, ready and able to hold the position for two (2) years.
d. He/She should have spent at least one (1) year schooling in the Co-ordinating Branch,
which has nominated him.
Provided however that where a member is pursuing post-graduate program he shall be
entitled to be nominated, as NEC member notwithstanding that he has not spent one (1)
year in the nominating branch.
e. He /She should have spent at least one (1) academic year unspent that is to say he/she
should not be in the final year.
Provided however that at least four of the Executive Committee members including the
President and Treasurer so appointed should serve their full two-year term in school as
Students and shall be presented to Council for approval.
f. The immediate preceding provision notwithstanding, the national council may approve
the nomination of any member from the nominating co-ordinating branch even though
he or she does not meet the requirements herein provided.
The secretariat shall rotate among the co-ordinating branches so approved by the
National Congress.


PART II
BRANCHES OF THE UNION

11. Co-ordinating branches:
1. The union shall have such co-ordinating branches as may be determined by Council and
approved by Congress.
2. A branch may be considered for co-ordinating branch status if:
i. The branch has served as sub-co-ordinating branch for at least five years and
ii. The branch is financially self-sustaining and generally has some reasonable economic
means.
iii. The branch has demonstrated its ability to manage and co-ordinate such branches that
have been or may be put under its charge or control.
3. All co-ordinating branches in existence before the coming into force of this constitution
shall be deemed to have been established under this constitution.
4. Each branch may have such number of Executives as it may consider appropriate who
shall be responsible for the internal management and administration of branch.
5. A co-ordinating branch shall have oversight responsibility over all such branches as this
Constitution, Congress and/or Council may put under its jurisdiction and/or control.
6. Each co-ordinating branch shall forward ts annual report to NEC at least 28 days before
congress in a congress year or the conference in a conference year. The report so
presented by the co-ordinating branch to congress in a congress year or conference in a
conference year. Such report shall include audited financial accounts of the said branch.

The above institutions shall be responsible to the National Executive in the execution of their
duties.

25. Nups-g Observer:
1. There shall be a Magazine called NUPS-G OBSERVER, which shall be published at least
once in a year and shall serve as the official mouthpiece of the Union.
2. An Editorial Board including sub-editors shall be set up by the National Secretariat in
consultation with the University of Ghana co-ordinating branch.
3. The National Secretariat shall be responsible for financing as well as disturbing the NUPS-G
OBSERVER.
